Ab to ye sab chhote chhote stations lagenge. Now these milestones will seem to be small stations on a long route train. :) :)
But nonetheless, these smaller stops have a significant role to play. In that they make possible the bigger milestones. After having done the 10K milestone, now the century milestones will seem like small cup cakes. Maybe the next thing of important enthusiasm will be the 11 thousandth post. Ah but that is still nine hundred songs away. And as soon as I think of the 11 thousandth post, my mind gets enamored by a subsequent post number that seems very magical – eleven thousand one hundred and eleven – 11111. Now that is surely going to invoke a lot of interest I am sure. That one will be the first number of its kind to appear on this blog. I mean, in five digit size.
Whoa, let me not ride so far out ahead of where we are. Today, we celebrate the first century, after the mammoth 10K achievement – the 10100th song. Many of the team members, including Atul ji himself have written earlier. That as the number of songs continued to grow in this blog, most were having the thoughts that the pace would be slowing down soon. After all, how many songs are there anyways, that one likes, and one would like to share, and one would like to write about. Well, by the time we reached the 10K mark, I believe there is general consensus now that we are not yet done with all the songs that we would like to see posted here. Not by any long shot. As we continue to post, and add numbers to the done list, we continue to also encounter newer gems and wonderful old memories that we wonder where have these numbers been hiding so far.
So the sum total of this thought process is that we are still good to go on and on – this ocean that we call the Hindi film music, is really vast and deep. And the fun and joy of the journey will continue.
As before, we have a significant milestone lined up for today, to coincide with the century milestone. With this song, we have now completed posting of 400 creations of that magician of melody, whom the film writers and journalists call ‘shaapit gandharv’ – the cursed maestro. Yes, we are bringing up the 400th song from the portfolio of that genius – Madan Mohan. This milestone is significant in itself. Given that the records show approximately 620 – plus or minus – songs, we have now hosted on our blog, two thirds of all the melodies created by him.
On our blog, we have a few articles that have already been posted about his career and his works. His career record is unique in some ways. Starting from 1950, Madan Mohan’s active career lasted till he passed away in 1975, at the peak of his career as well as life – he was just 51. However, his work continued to be released in films right up until 1980. And then, after a gap of almost three decades of his passing away, a film was released as recently as 2004, that contained songs based on the tunes that he had created – thirty or forty years ago. The film is ‘Veer Zara’. Javed Akhtar and Sanjeev Kohli (son of Madan Mohan) collaborated to create the songs based on his un-used melodies. This is a unique accomplishment, by any account.
For today’s celebration post, I present this endearing song in the voice of Asha Bhosle. The film is ‘Bombay Race Course’ from 1965. Yes, it is a notable feature of this very much A grade music director, that he has also done a lot of work for B / C grade films. But of course, the melodies and songs are peerless.
The film is produced under the banner of PR Films and is directed by Kedar Kapoor. The list of actors includes Ajit, Nalini Jaywant, KN Singh, Johnny Walker, Minoo Mumtaz, and Murad etc. amongst others. The lyrics are from the pen of Rajendra Krishan.
The soft romantic mood sets in as soon as the opening bars of the music start to play. And the enchantment continues through the song. Slow paced rhythm and melody, that has been done so well by Asha ji, who is better known for songs of the faster and perkier kind. So beautifully rendered.
