Today (24 october 2014) is the birthday of Greta, who is known to most of us as Memsaab of the blog memsaabstory.com. Her blog began in 2007 and it soon became a favourite blog and a meeting place of HFM bloggers. This blog began one year after her blog and I would stumble upon her blog quite frequently during my search for songs. For quite some time I was under the impression that she was a blogger of Indian origin who was based in US. It took me some time to realise that she was an American lady with no previous Indian connections and that she had learnt about Hindi movies from the ground zero up, and that too in just a few years. She in fact describes her initiation into India in general and and Hindi movies in particular in great and interesting details in her blog.
Personally I learnt a great deal about Hindi movies from her blog. I was not aware of movies like “Miss Mary” (1956), “Solva Saal”(1958) etc before I visited her blog. And I, like many other bloggers learnt about many forgotten artists of the past. We all are extremely thankful to Greta for introducing us to artists like Laxmi Chhaaya, Bela Bose, Edwina, Nazir Kashmiri etc.
I have not yet discussed about her articles so far. Her tremendous sense of humour, eyes for detail, and finding interesting and original angles out of seemingly trivial situations makes her an author who can keep her readers spellbound from the first word to the last. Her reviews of movies are more entertaining than the movies themselves and she can make you feel like watching those movies again, no matter how boring you found these movies in the first place. She is blessed with that kind of persuasive abilities.
And let us not forget her qualities as a human being. She is an extremely friendly, generous and tolerant person. I have seen some extremely nasty and offensive comments in her blog but she has dealt with them with the kind of patience and tolerance that very few people can have. It is her welcoming and accomodating nature that has won her several admirers and it was these qualities, coupled with her mastery over her topics of discussion that made people become her fans and repeat visitors to her blog.
Some of the artists that she greatly admires are Shammi Kapoor, Chandramohan, Dara Singh, Ranjeet, Helen, Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Raakhi etc.
She has made friends not only among ordinary bloggers but also in the Hindi movie world. Names like Raju Hirani and Aamir Khan of the present generation and people like Edwina, Ted Lyons etc from the previous generations are some people who have become her close acquaintances by now.
Her love and compassion extends not just among fellow humans but extends to other creatures too. She is a great dog lover and many of her articles in the blog are on her pets. She have had several dogs by now and these dogs are extremely well known to us all thanks to her articles and photographs.
When I write any articles on dogs in this blog, I look forward to Greta’s comment on the article. She on one occasion wrote ane aricle in her blog on anipals.
Greta has been a great supporter of this blog. She put in some nice words about this blog in her blog during the early days and helped this blog pick up steam and gain momentum. She has also been kind enough to write a few guest articles in this blog.
Of late, she has not been very active in her blog. The reason cited by her is that she is unable to find new things to write. When I approached her to write a guest article during the 10k celebrations of this blog, she expressed the same reservations, but I persisted. She agreed to write a guest post and I must say that I found her article just as great as any that she had written in the past.
She has been the catalyst behind some great Hindi movie related initiatives. One of them is the “artists gallery” where she has collected lots of photographs of artists active in various decades and have put names to those faces after considerable research. The other initiative is getting together a team of talented collaborators who have helped improve the qulaity of original source material and add sub titles to these movies. These movies, which are great boons for non Hindi speaking movie lovers are made available as “Edu productions” movies, where Edu stands for Edwina, the HF artist from 1960s who by now is like a family to us- she is that well known by now among us- mainly thanks to Greta.
I can go on and on, because I as her unabashed admirer have lots of things to say about her. But I think this should suffice for now.
On this occasion, here is a song from “Raaka” (1965). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Chorus. Asad Bhopali is the lyricist. Music is composed by Dattaram. The song is picturised on two of her favourite artists namely Mumtaz and Dara Singh. The song itself is an “expression of love” song lip synced by Mumtaz and others.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.
Here is wishing Greta a very happy birthday on behalf of all of us.

haaye ghazab ho gaya
koi mila raah mein
aur dil kho gaya
haaye koi mila raah mein
aur dil kho gaya
phir kya hua
arre haaye ghazab ho gaya aa
haaye ghazab ho gaya
usne bhi dekha
maine bhi dekha
usne bhi dekha
maine bhi dekha
haaye donon ki nazren milin
oye oye oye oye door se
yeh baat hai
main bhi na boli
wo bhi na bola
main bhi na boli
wo bhi na bola
haaye aankhon mein baat huyi
haaye haaye haaye haaye door se
o mujhe pyaar se
achcha
yoon hi dekha kiya
phir kya hua
arre haaye ghazab ho gaya
haaye ghazab ho gaya aa aa aa
haaye ghazab ho gaya
uske ishaare
thhe bade pyaare
uske ishaare thhe bade pyaare
haaye main un ishaare mein
haaye haaye haaye haaye
kho gayi
haaye daiyya
tauba ji tauba
aage hua kya

aage hua kya
haaye main to deewaani si oye oye oye oye ho gayi
jaane kya soch ke

phir kya hua
haaye haaye haaye ghazab ho gaya aa aa
haaye ghazab ho gaya aa aa
haaye ghazab ho gaya
hosh uda ke
pyaar jataa ke
hosh uda ke
pyaar jataa ke
arre zalim ne dil mera
haaye haaye haaye haaye le liya
hoye hoye hoye
socha na samjha
dekha na bhala
socha na samjha
dekha na bhala
arre dil leke dard mujhe
oye oye oye oye de diya
mera dil chheen ke

wo kahin chal diya
phir kya hua
arre haaye ghazab ho gaya aa aa
haaye ghazab ho gaya aa aa
haaye ghazab ho gaya
koi mila raah mein
aur dil kho gaya
haaye koi mila raah mein
aur dil kho gaya
phir kya hua
haaye ghazab ho gaya aa aa

haaye ghazab ho gaya aa aa
haaye ghazab ho gaya aa aa
