#A tribute to Jani Babu Qawwal-Remembrance Day 28th Jan’2023 #
—————————————————————————————-

As the title of this post suggests this post is in ‘Remembrance of the great Qawwal – Jani Babu Qawwal.

We are paying a belated tribute to him on his ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ which was on 28th January.

I had in my earlier posts in the series of ‘Qawwalis from the Seventies’ mentioned that I grow up hearing these names for ‘singing Qawwalis’, Jani Babu, Shakila Bano Bhopali, Aziz Nazan and Shankar-Shambhu in my childhood days.

I vaguely remember to have attended one such program with my father when I was a child. And, when I get associated with this blog, I was always eager to read about these artistes. I have a big nostalgia with this ‘mehangaayi maar gayi’ song from ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan-1974’ and the voice of Jani Babu in it (in fact voices of all in this song). During recent years I was looking for detailed information about his biography and career but could not get to know much about him.

Then I came across his Qawwalis uploaded on ‘YouTube’ by a person in Dhamangaon-Amravati (Maharashtra). I was in Kenya then. In fact, I even spoked to this person on phone but could not get much information or details. I also contacted one senior person in the WhatsApp group from Nagpur and he helped me with a brief write-up. About a couple of days back when I was just going through my book collection, I find this book ‘Swaron Ki Yatra’ (Hindi Film Gaayaki ka Safar). When I checked this book, I find a detailed two-page article on Jani Babu Qawwal. Using this information, I am presenting a brief about Jani Babu as given below.

Jani Babu Qawwal was born as Syed Jaan Muhammad at Hinganghat (a big city in District Wardha, near Nagpur Maharashtra). Details of his date of birth are not available so far.

He mastered in singing Qawwalis at a very young age. He started taking lessons in classical music and Qawwalis from Ustad Mohammad Khan Shamshiry when he was seven years old only. After that he came to Jalgaon (Maharashtra) and took lessons in music from Abdul Rehman Kaanchwaale. Later he came to Bombay (now Mumbai).

In those years Qawwalis were played like ‘kirtans’ in social gatherings. Jaani Babu wanted Qawwalis to be more entertaining with easily understandable language for common people. So, he gave Qawwalis a simple texture, and a new dimension to Qawwalis, like Qawwalis on ‘husn aur ishq’, ‘sawaal-jawaab’ etc. Many film personalities showed interest in his works and motivated him in his efforts to make ‘Qawwalis’ more entertaining. He also got a major support from Shakila Bano Bhopali. They jointly entertained people for years together thereafter. Their concerts always run to packed houses and even the tickets for their concerts used to be sold in ‘black’.

Jaani Babu’s first film song, a Qawwali from the movie -‘Jungle Princess’ – came in 1958 with Shakila Bano Bhopali only. It was ‘adaayen teer hain andaaz barchhi bhaale hain’ which was picturized on Jaani Babu and Shakila Bano Bhopali. Playback for Shakila Bano Bhopali was given by Mubarak Begum. This is said to be the first qawwali of ‘men vs. women’ competition and is considered a ‘modern qawwali’ well ahead of its time as it did contain ‘English words’ into its lyrics as well.

After ‘Jungle Princess’ Jaani Babu’s Qawwalis appeared in ‘Behram Daaku-1959’, ‘Aalamaara ki Beti’, ‘Choron Ki Baaraat’, ‘Diler Haseena’ (all from 1960), ‘Black Shadow’ (1961), ‘Magic Box-1963’, ‘Birju Ustaad’(1964), ‘Chaar Darvesh’(1964), ‘Magic Carpet’(1964), ‘Rustom-E-Rome’(1964), ‘Accident’(1965), ‘Black Arrow’(1965), ‘Chhupa Rustom’(1965), ‘Son of Hatimtai’(1965), ‘Sakhi Lootera’(1969), ‘Truck Driver’(1970), ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz’(1973),
In the movie ‘Son of Hatimtai’ he sang with Mohd Rafi. His qawwali – from ‘Sakhi Lootera’ (meethhi baaton mein na inki aana kabhi) also became very popular then.

In 1974 his voice was again very well appreciated by all, in the qawwali ‘mehangaayi maar gayi’ (for me this song is pure nostalgia) (it stood at no.1 in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of 1975).
There after Jani Babu’s voice featured in ‘Shankar-Shambhu-1976’, ‘Do Khilaadi-1976’ (raat abhi baaki hai, baat abhi baaki hai’ (again a pure nostalgic song for me), ‘Mandir Masjid-1977’, ‘Do Dilwaale’ (1977), ‘Mastaan Dada’ (1977), ‘Aulia E Islaam-1979’. In ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba-1977’ his voice appeared in the song ‘Saibaba bolo’.

(There must be many more which did not find mentioned above. We need to compile the total list of his songs in HFM. I would be happy to share the list of his songs in HFM in future whenever I get an opportunity for that.)

Jani Babu also took lessons from Shabbir Hussain (Pakistani Ghazal Singer?) in singing Ghazals and he started moulding ghazals into qawwali format which again tells us how innovative he was.

Some of his ghazal-qawwalis like ‘seenaa dhuaan dhuaan hai, ishaare kahaan gaye’ and ‘is tarah gardish e ayyaam se baatein ki hai, kabhi taubaa kabhi jaam se baatein ki hai’ became very popular.

His devotional qawwali ‘aasaar -e -qayaamat’ created new records and its ‘records’ were sold in many thousands.

As a music director he gave music for the movies ‘Noor Mahal-1965’ and ‘Aulia-E-Islaam-1979’.

Jani Babu Qawwal passed away on 28th January’2008.

He will be always remembered for his pioneering works in Qawwali and for giving new dimensions to qawwali singing. Qawwalis which were hitherto restricted to Sufi Saints and to singing in Dargah’ only became popular and reach out to common man because of Jani Babu Qawwal.

***

In remembrance of Jani Babu Qawwal I am presenting a song from the movie
‘Noor Mahal – 1965’.

“Noor Mahal-1965” was a costume drama movie directed by Naushir Engineer for ‘Ratan Productions, Bombay’.

It had Chitra, Jagdeep, Tiwari, Lalita Desai, Wazeer Muhammad Khan, Madhumati and others.

This movie had six songs written by Saba Afghani (four songs), Aziz Ghazi and Noor Dewasi (one song each).

Music for this movie was composed by Jani Babu Qawwal.

In the singers’ list, for the songs of this movie, HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) mentions the names of Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Suman Kalyanpur, Suresh Rajwanshi, Kamal Barot and Krishna Kalle.

The most well-known song from this movie ‘mere mehboob na jaa, aaj ki raat na jaa’ was posted on the blog on 04.01.2009 and one more song – a qawwali– has been posted from this movie on 14.12.2021. (I was under the impression that the Rafi song from this movie has already been posted by Atul ji, but it seems that we still have to wait or it further 🙂 ).

Today’s song is sung by Manna Dey and lyrics are by Aziz Ghazi. Music is composed by Jani Babu.

In the movie this song happens in the back ground of a stage-act where, I guess, a dance troop is playing a show where they play a typical ‘radha-krishna’ love song.

We can see people watching this play in the movie and some ‘conspiracy’ going on behind the scenes in the movie.
I am unable to identify the actors and actresses performing on this song.

The audio version of this song is longer version. The song picturisation in the movie doesn’t have the first stanza. (I am not aware if the movie video available on internet is an edited one or complete version).

Listening to this composition reminds me of the ‘holi song’ from the movie ‘Navrang-1959’.

Let us now enjoy the today’s wonderful composition by Music Director Jani Babu ‘Qawwal’…

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

In this post we cover a song from the ‘1965’ movie “Aasmaan Mahal”.

“Aasmaan Mahal” was directed by Khawaja Ahmed Abbas for ‘Naya Sansaar, Bombay’.It had Prithviraj, Surekha, Nana Palsikar, Rashid Khan, Madhukar, Yunus Parvez, Mridula, Dilip Raj, Ravikant, Virendra Raj Anand, Chandar B. Kaushal, Anwar Hussain, Naseem Bano, Ishrat Sultana, Anugeeta, David, Ram Singh, Murty, M.A. Parkar, Irshad Panjatan, Babbanlal, Agrawal, Rani, Shibdhatullah and others.

This movie has six songs. Three songs were credited to Ali Sardar Jafri, in one of them he gets jointly credited with Ghalib, while Majaz gets credited for one song. Lyricist name is not mentioned for remaining two songs.

Music for this movie was composed by J.P. Kaushik.

Here is the list of songs in this movie:-

SNo Song Title Lyricist Singer/s Posted On
01 Toone samjha hi nahin kya hai haqeeqat meri Jafri Vijaya Majumdar 27.07.2019
02 Khubsoorat hai teri tarah shikaayat teri Jafri Mahendra Kapoor
03 Laao pilaao, main sharaabi hoon Jafri+Ghalib Vijaya Majumdar, Mahendra Kapoor
04 Main aahen bhar nahin sakta ki naghmein gaa nahin sakta Majaz Vijaya Majumdar, Mahendra Kapoor 17.05.2017
05 Kaun achchha hai yahaan kaun kharaab Not mentioned Not mentioned
06 Aye raat zaraa aahistaa guzar Not mentioned Geeta, Madhukar

It can be seen from the above table that this movie had made its debut on the blog on 17.05.2017 with a detailed post about Khawaja Ahmed Abbas and this film by our Shri Sudhir Kapoor ji. (Interested readers can read that article posted on 17.05.2017).

One more song was added to this movie on 27.07.2019.

The song being discussed is the third song from this movie being presented today.

This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and it is lip synced on screen by Dileep Raj. This song is part of a ‘mushaaira’.

In the movie this recitation takes place after a ‘nazm’ recitation by the actress Surekha viz ‘toone samjhi hi nahin kya hai haqeeqat meri’. The actor Dileep Raj who plays a son of the ‘Nawaab’ Prithvi Raj Kapoor in the movie presents another ‘nazm’ in response. Both of them love each other but their ‘social status’ is preventing them from marrying each other. At the end of the movie, all this is ‘happily resolved’ as mentioned by Sudhir ji in his post here.

We have some beautiful verses written by Ali Sardar Jafri and recited by Mahendra Kapoor. The video of the song has no music in it while the audio recording of the song is accompanied by music.

Let us now enjoy this song from ‘Aasmaan Mahal-1965’…

The tinsel town industry is a troubling mix of good and bad fortunes. All the zest and joy that we witness in front of the arc lights is a small part of this business. The larger part of mixed fortunes, career heartbreaks and un-celebrated talents is in the shadow world behind the arc lights. This world is invisible to the viewers because the glare of the arc lights does not allow a view into the darkness behind. For every success story that we celebrate, there are ten times more stories of despair and dejection.

Films once released, are a cultural heritage forever (of course subject to preservation and survival). But in my opinion it is the music and the song of the films that leaves a stronger and a more lasting impression on the minds of the film going and music listening audiences.

In the 90+ years of talkie film industry in India, close to a hundred thousand songs have been created, recorded, used in films and also released for consumption by the music lovers. Hundreds, maybe thousands of artists – music directors, musicians, lyricists, singers, sound recordists – have been associated with the envisioning and then the creation of the film songs. The sad part is that even the most involved and the most serious lovers of music, we remember just a handful of artists. It is not just a limitation of the human memory retention. It is also the fact that the industry itself, and the associated media, have over the years celebrated just those few handful artists, and neglected to pay attention to the others. And that is why I said above – “The tinsel town industry is a troubling mix of good and bad fortunes”.

Serious connoisseurs of this art form are well aware of the many names that should have, but never did make it to the top tier of the industry. This post touches upon one such unsung talent, whose creations indicate the presence of an enchanting mind at work behind the melodies. The name is C Arjun.

Arjun Parmanand Chandnani – born on 1st September 1933 in Karachi, had a natural affinity from music, inherited from his father who was a singer and a musician. At the time of partition in 1947, Arjun was just 14 years old. His family migrated from Karachi (now in Pakistan) to Baroda. He came to Bombay in the mid 1950s. Of course, the initial years was the time of struggle to prove himself. He worked with Bulo C Rani as assistant during this period.

In 1958, he got his first break as an independent music director when he composed for the Sindhi film ‘Abana’ (1958). The film and its music were a success with the Sindhi speaking population. The film has a wonderful song of Holi festival – “Holi Aayee Re Aayee Re Holi Holi”, and another fun song “Daal Chhola Double. . .” which became very popular as a sales pitch song of a rice-chhola meal seller. The song is available online and is a real fun listen, with Tuntun (aka Uma Devi) visible on screen with her antics.

Moving on, in 1960, he got another important break in his career, this time composing for the mainstream Hindi cinema. The film is ‘Road No. 303’. A low budget film, with lesser known stars, cannot be expected to be a box office victory. But the musical score – the songs are something to listen to – “Pehli Pehli Baar Miley Hain Do Deewaane, Achcha Ji” sung by Geeta Dutt and Rafi Sb, “Dil Ko Ye Kya Hua” in the voice of Asha ji, “Sun Lo Mehrban Mushkil Jeena Yahan” a wonderful creation in the voice of Geeta Dutt.

More work followed, although not in terms of any well known banner, or in terms of number of films. Averaging one film, or less, per year, nonetheless, he continued to give wonderful music no matter the films were all low budget. In 1961 came ‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’. More memorable songs– especially “Aaye Ho To Jaane Ka Bahaana Na Milega” sung by Asha ji. “Ho Gori Zulm Kare Zulf Ka Bikhar Jaana” in the voice of Rafi Sb, and the wonderful Asha – Mukesh duet “Main Abhi Gair Hoon”.

1964 was the year of the film ‘Punarmilan’. Most people would remember neither the film, not the associated credits. But tell them the song “Paas Baitho Tabiyat Behal Jaayegi” in the voice of Rafi Sb, and there will be an immediate recognition. This ghazal by Indiwar has become a timeless classic that stands along with the major filmi ghazal creations of all times. 1965 and we have the film ‘Ek Saal Pehle’ with the wonderful Asha Talat duet – “Nazar Utha Ke Ye Rangeen Samaa Rahe Na Rahe”; 1966 and we have another classic duet by Rafi Sb and Suman Kalyanpur – “Hamne Teri Jafaa Ka Wafaa Naam Rakh Diya” from the film ‘Chale Hain Sasural’. In 1966, we also heard the timeless popular Rafi-Talat duet “Gham Ki Andheri Raat Mein”  from film ‘Sushila’. The pattern continues with the films which one does not care to remember – ‘Lamboo In Hong Kong’ (1967), ‘Mangu Dada’ (1970), ‘Ustad Pedro’ (1971), ‘Guru Aur Chela’ (1973) – all relatively unknown films but all carrying gems of the genius of C Arjun.

And then, in 1975 came another low budget film that should also have been consigned to the list of unknowns, but it became a fluke and unexpected blockbuster hit – ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’. The success of the film may have brought some financial respite to the composer, but did not do any wonders to his career which continued to be in low budget bracket. He continued to create music for films till 1983, his last film as an independent music director being ‘Sati Naag Kanya’.

He passed away on 30th April, 1992, literally with his boots on. He had a heart attack while working at recording studio. Just about a month ago, we passed by the 31st remembrance day for him.

The song presented with this post is a delightful all female duet in the voices of Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot. The film is ‘Ek Saal Pehle’ from 1965. The film is produced under the banner of SB Films, Bombay and is directed by Dharam Kumar. The star cast as listed in the Geet Kosh is Sujit Kumar, Sayeeda Khan, KN Singh, Jagirdar, Sherry, Asit Sen, Sundar, Neelam, Rajan Kapoor, Sunanda, Ramlal, Jilani, Mirajkar, Helen, Madhumati, and Maqbool. Looking at the star cast, it is my guess that this song must have been filmed as a twin dance song on Helen and Madhumati.

There are 5 songs for the film listed in Geet Kosh. The songs of this film are penned by Indiwar and Jaan Nisar Akhtar. This particular song is written by Indiwar. Interesting note – four of the songs are released on gramophone records, and the 5th song is not. As per a footnote in the Geet Kosh, the singer for the 5th song is identified as Krishna Kalle by C Arjun himself.

Wonderful music and wonderful rhythm – let us listen and enjoy this song.

The name Neeraj means one that is born of water. The singular reference is towards the lotus flower. In Hindi, ‘नीरज’ is a synonym for the lotus flower.  And so is Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’ – a lotus amongst the poets and songwriters whose verses have graced the screens of Hindi Cinema.

The mention of Neeraj brings to mind a multitude of so many popular songs – songs that popular songs because of their lyrics.

subah naa aayi, shaam na aayi
jis din teri yaad na aayi, yaad na aayi
(‘Cha Cha Cha’,1964)

. . .
aur hum ajaan se
door ke makaan se
paalki liye huya kahaar dekhte rahe
kaarwaan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe
(‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’, 1965)

wo hum na the wo tum na the
wo rehguzar thhi pyaar ki
luti jahaan be bewajeh paalki bahaar ki . . .
(‘Cha Cha Cha’,1964)

umariya. . . bin khewak ki naiyya
paal nahin patwaar nahin
aur tez chale purvaiyya
(‘Majhli Didi’, 1968)

ye kaun thak ke so raha hai
gulmohar ki chhaon mein
(‘Tu Hi Meri Zindagi’, 1965)

kaal ka pahiyya ghoome bhaiya
laakh tareh insaan chalen
le ke chale baraat kabhi
to kabhi bina samaan chale
(‘Chanda Aur Bijli’, 1969)

kehta hai joker, saara zamaana
aadhi haqeeqat aadha fasaana
(‘Mera Naam Joker’, 1970)

raaja gaye taj gaye badlaa jahaan saara
roz magar badhta jaaye caravaan hamaara
phool ham hazaaron lekin khushboo ek hamaari
prem ke pujari
ham hain ras ke bhikhaari
ham hain prem ke pujaari
(‘Prem Pujaari’, 1970)

dil aaj shaayar hai gham aaj naghma hai
shab ye ghazal hai sanam
auron ke sheron ko o sun’ne waale
ho is taraf bhi karam
(‘Gambler’, 1971)

sooni sooni saans ke sitaar par
bheege bheege aansuon ke taar par
(‘Lal Patthar, 1971)

jhoom ke gaa yoon aaj mere dil
raat to guzre subah na aaye
jaise koi bachpan ki kahani
yaad bhi ho aur bhool bhi jaaye
(‘Patanga’, 1971)

All these songs, and more, touch so many threads of endearing memories, of songs heard decades back, but they still are fresh in the mind. The flavor of these songs will never grow stale, no matter how many times they are heard.

All from the pen of Gopaldas Saxena – ‘Neeraj’.

Neeraj was born on 4th January, 1924, in the village of Puravali, near Mahewa in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh. His school and college education happened in Aligarh, where he also became a professor of Hindi Literature in the Dharma Samaj College. Faraway from the world of cinema, Gopaldas was writing his poetry and presenting at the kavi sammelans all across India. His introduction to films happened by accident.

In February of 1960, he was visiting Bombay to attend one such kavi sammelan. He was staying at the home of Manhar, a poet friend. One day he had a visitor, a young man named R Chandra. Chandra was earlier a student of Gopaldas in Aligarh, and now was in Bombay, connected with the film world. He was a producer, and had just completed work on the film ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960). He was now planning his next venture, to be titled ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’. He was there to request his former teacher to write the songs for his upcoming film. And so, the film journey of Neeraj was initiated.

The planned film was unusually delayed, and eventually released in 1965. This was the first film for which Neeraj wrote and recorded the songs. In the interim, however, he also got the offer to write for another film ‘Cha Cha Cha’ for the banner Bhavdeep Films, Bombay, being directed by Chandrashekhar, who was also the hero of the film. This film got released earlier than ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’, in 1964. And so it has come to be considered as the debut film for Neeraj.

The songs of ‘Cha Cha Cha’ became popular and were frequently played on the radio waves. So did the songs of ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’. These films were followed by ‘Sati Nari’ (1965) with the song “Tum Naacho Ras Barse”, then “Ye Kaun Thak Ke So Raha Hai” and “Ae Mere Watan, Mere Pyaare Watan” in the film ‘Tu Hi Meri Zindagi’ (1965), “Zindagi Dulhan Hai Ek Raat Ki” in the film ‘Dulhan EK Raat Ki’ (1966) etc. By the mid 1960s, Neeraj was a songwriter quite popular and quite much in demand in the Bombay cinema world.

Over the next part of the 1960s decade Neeraj developed fruitful and worthy association with SD Burman and Shanker Jaikishan. With S-J he worked in 16 films. With SD his association started with ‘Prem Pujari’ (1970), when Dev Anand decided to bring Neeraj in to NavKetan camp. He would do three more films with Dev Anand – ‘Gambler’ (1971), ‘Chhupa Rustam’ (1972) and ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ (1973). He also worked with SD Burman on the film ‘Sharmilee’ (1971).

1971 proved to be his most prolific year – 10 films came to the cinema theaters with songs written by him. And that watershed year also saw the limiting phase out of Neeraj’s association with Hindi cinema. Jaikishan passed away in 1971 and SD Burman in 1975. His two closest relationships that were built with MDs of Hindi films came to an abrupt closure. The fortunes of SJ began dwindling after the departure of Jaikishan. With the passing away of SD Burman, the work by Neeraj in Hindi cinema also started to slowly phase out. By the middle of 1970s, Neeraj’s association with Hindi film world wound itself up, and the poet returned to Aligarh. He hung up his filmi coat and returned to his earlier profession as a teacher.

Neeraj’s body of work in Hindi films comprises of just about 100 odd songs. But a glance at the portfolio of his songs, one easily identifies a very large number of popular hit songs. A sampler is presented at the beginning of this write up. And there are more.

Neeraj passed away on 19 July, 2018 at New Delhi at the age of 93.

Neeraj’s year of birth is indicated both as 1924 and 1925 in different references online. Whatever the correct year may be, this year turns out to be the centenary year for him. A week back, his birth date – 4th January was his centenary of birth.

For this post, I present this wonderful female duet song from the 1965 film ‘Sati Nari’. This is a fairly fast paced and melodious composition by Pt Shivram Krishna. The singing voices are of Usha Timothy and Kamal Barot. The words of the song tell about Radha ji being advised by her friends not to go to the banks of Jamuna river, because there Krishna will ensnare in his trap with his charm and beauty – “Wahaan Kanha Phaanse Machhli Bina Kaanta Dor Ke”.

A fun song of sahelis teasing Radha ji about her terms of endearment with Krishna. A wonderfully imagined, composed and rendered song – it is a pleasurable listen.

Blog Day :

5657 Post No. : 18158

Today, January 13, 2024, is 94th birth anniversary of music director, Sardar Malik. In his childhood, he had wished to be a singer, but the fate turned him toward music direction. He did not have a prolific career. He never got opportunity to work with top film banners in spite of talents which was reflected in most of the songs he composed. Recently, I had gone through his interview on Vividh Bharati which was probably conducted after his ‘retirement’ from the film world. From his talk, I could visualize him to be a man of principles, a man of least resistance and a man of self-respect which will not allow him to indulge in networking. Lastly, he was a sensitive person who refrained from hurting anyone even if he had suffered from wrongdoings.

Sardar Malik (13/01/1930 -27/01/2006) was born in Kapurthala in a middle-class family. From the childhood, he developed interest in singing. Seeing his interest in music, his father put him under the tutelage of Ustad Mubarak Ali who was a percussionist. One day, he saw an advertisement in the newspaper from Uday Shankar’s India Cultural Center, Almora, inviting applications for admission to the Center. He was keen to join but his parents could not afford the fees. Knowing his interest in music, Maharaja of Kapurthala sponsored him to the Center.

In India Cultural Center, Almora, Sardar Malik learnt from visiting faculties which consisted of poet Sumitra Nandan Pant, Shankaran Namboodiri (Kathakali), Guruji Pillai (Bharatanatyam), Amobi Singh (Manipuri), apart from ballet dance from Uday Shankar. He also learnt music from Ustad Allauddin Khan and Vishnudas Shirali. Mohan Saigal and Guru Dutt were his classmates. Guru Dutt was his room mate also. After the completion of 5-year course, they joined Uday Shankar’s dance troop and traveled all over India performing dances. Sometimes, Sardar Malik gave solo dance performance in place of Uday Shankar whenever the latter was not available due to his illness.

During 1945, due to the after-effect of the World War II, the financial strain compelled Uday Shankar to close down his dance academy. Sardar Malik along with Mohan Saigal and Guru Dutt came to Mumbai to become choreographers in Hindi films. While Prabhat Films took Guru Dutt as choreographer, both Sardar Malik and Mohan Saigal jointly become choreographer for Nanabhai’s Bhatt’s film ‘Chaalis Karod’ (1945). After this, they both decided to give up choreography. While Mohan Saigal become director, Sardar Malik decided to pursue his interest in singing.

Jayant Desai and Ramesh Sehgal, the producer and director, respectively for ‘Renuka’ (1947) heard Sardar Malik singing in a programme. Impressed with his singing and his background, they offered him to compose songs for the film. So, Sardar Malik debuted as the music director for the film, ‘Renuka’ (1947) besides singing 4 songs. The film failed at the box office. But his song compositions for the film got attention from other film makers. His next two films, ‘Raaz’ (1949) and ‘Stage’ (1951) did not fare well either. By this time, Sardar Malik realised that Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh and Talat Mehmood were far superior singers than him. So, he gave up singing and concentrated on Music Direction.

In 1953, Sardar Malik came into limelight with his song, “Ae Gham-e-Dil Kyaa Karoon in ‘Thokar’ (1953) and “Bahaaron Ki Duniya Pukaare Tu Aa Ja” in ‘Laila Majnu’ (1953). In ‘Chor Baazaar’ (1954), “Hui Hai Humse Naadaani Teri Mehfil Mein Aa Baithhe” and in ‘Aab-e Hayaat’ (1955), “Main Gareebon Ka Dil Hoon Watan Ki Zabaan” became very popular. Sardar Malik was getting 2-3 film every year till about 1960. Sardar Malik got real recognition as a music director in ‘Saaranga’ (1960) and ‘Mera Ghar Mere Bachche’ (1960). The songs, “Saaranga Teri Yaad Mein” and “Bahaaron Se Poochho Mere Pyaar Ko Tum” from respective films became very popular. He signed a good number of films after these two films’ musical successes.

While everything was going fine in his career, an incident involving the heated arguments between a top lyricist and a top female playback singer at the time of recording of a song under his baton, destroyed his musical career. The female singer left the recording studio in a huff. Her entire anger fell on Sardar Malik because she felt that he had not supported her during her arguments with the lyricist. Suddenly, he stopped getting booking for recording studios. In the circumstances, he lost almost all the films which either he was working on or were lined up.

Sardar Malik never revealed the names of the top lyricist and the top female singer involved in the arguments. But it was apparent that they were Sahir Ludhianvi and Lata Mangeshkar. Both of them continued to work together but Lata stopped working with Sardar Malik after this episode. During 1960-65, he got mostly B Grade films in the genre of mythology, fantasy and action. During this period, Suman Kalyanpur and Asha Bhosle were his main female singers.

During his two decades of active musical career in films, Sardar Malik composed songs in about two dozen films. ‘Panch Ratan’ (1965) was virtually his last film though he later did ‘Gyaani ji’ (1977) jointly with Premnath.

Post 1965, when Sardar Malik had no work, he faced financial hardship. In a fit of depression, he threw all his collections of 78 RPM gramophone records of his songs in the Arabian Sea. He became a recluse and avoided going out of his house. Hasrat Jaipuri, his brother-in-law and Vishnudas Shirali, his music teacher at India Cultural Center helped him. He started music classes for young children, including his three sons, Anu Malik, Daboo Malik and Abu Malik.

With his eldest son, Anu Malik’s musical career taking off in the 90s, Sardar Malik was a satisfied person. After many years, Sardar Malik traveled outside Mumbai to witness his son, Anu Malik getting National Film Award for the best music director for the film, ‘Refugee’ (2001) in New Delhi.

Sardar Malik passed away on January 27, 2006 at the age of 76 as a happy person with all his sons and grandchildren, Anmol Malik, Armaan Malik and Amaal Malik doing well in their respective music fields.

As I mentioned earlier, ‘Panch Ratan’ (1965) was Sardar Malik’s virtually the last film for which he composed songs. The film was produced by Vinod Doshi and was directed by Kamran. The cast included Randhawa, Parveen Chaudhary, Kamran, Kamal Mehra, Shyam Kumar, Amarnath, Randhir, Meenaxi, Joginder Singh, Saudagar Singh, Madhumati, Laxmi Chhaya, Aruna, Jeevankala etc.

The film had an usual story which most of the ‘B’ grade costume action-drama films would have in Hindi. The film has all the ingredients of this genre of films like sword fights, free style wrestling, horse riding chase and a host of dancers for entertainments. Additionally, this ‘B” grade film had some ‘C’ grade antics by some of the side actors. The gist of the story of the film is as under:

After overthrowing the king of Shamgarh with the help of a treacherous Senapati (Amarnath) of the king, Sangram Singh (Kamran) becomes the ruler with a brutal force. The people are fed up with his oppressive rule. The people of Shamgarh under the leadership of Raja (Randhawa) rise against his rule. Sangram Singh has not only to crush the rebellion led by Raja, he has to settle his personal score also as Raja is in love with his sister, Chandralekha (Parveen Chaudhary).

Sangram Singh kidnaps Raja’s mother (Meenaxi) and as a tit for tat, Raja kidnaps Chandralekha. After kidnapped persons are exchanged, Sangram Singh announces the engagement of Chandralekha with the Prince of Vijaygarh (Randhir). Now Raja has one more reason to fight Sangram Singh for the sake of Chandralekha. Raja successfully leads his fight against Sangram Singh with the help of his other four ‘ratan’ – Birju (Shyam Kumar), Tingoo (Kamal Mehra), Balwant (Saudagar Singh) and one more (I am not able to identify him), to end his brutal rule and brings back the ousted King of Shamgarh.

‘Panch Ratan’ (1965) has 5 songs written by Anjaan (4) and Upendra (1) which have been set to music by Sardar Malik. Two songs from the film have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, “Hum Tum Ye Rang Roop Ye Raaten from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Suman Kalyanpur on the words of Anjaan. It is a dance song picturised on Madhumati.

The occasion is the engagement ceremony of Princess Chandralekha with the Prince of Vijaygarh. It is a ploy by Sangram Singh (Kamran) to capture Raja (Randhawa) and his gang knowing that they would come in disguise. And they do attend the ceremony in disguise. First, Kamal Mehra dances with Madhumati followed by Shyam Kumar. Kamran and Amarnath can be seen during the dance performance.
